Haiti tops the 2024 Global Impunity Index, published annually by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). The index measures unsolved journalist murders relative to a country’s population.
In addition to Haiti, which appears on the index for the second time, Mexico and Brazil are also on the 2024 list, respectively ranking eighth and eleventh.
According to CPJ, 77% of journalist murders remain unpunished worldwide, meaning no one has been held accountable, and the cases remain unresolved. However, this is an improvement from a decade ago when CPJ recorded a 90% impunity rate, though it is not a reason to celebrate, the report said.
“Impunity has taken root globally, with roughly four out of five journalist killers systematically escaping justice,” the report said.
