Haitian journalist wounded in 2024 appeals for help after surgery in Cuba

"Haitian journalist Jocelyn Justin is going through a particularly difficult time after undergoing surgery on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2025, in Havana, Cuba. Shot more than a year earlier in Port-au-Prince, he underwent the procedure at the Cira García Central Clinic in the Cuban capital, thanks to delayed funding from the Haitian government estimated at $4,600.

Justin was among the eight journalists injured on Dec. 24, 2024, during the attempted reopening of the State University of Haiti Hospital. […] The incident ended in tragedy: at least three people died, including journalists Markenzy Nathou and Jimmy Jean, as well as police officer Daniel Renaud.

[…] Justin had to wait almost a year for his surgery to be covered. Still in Cuba for follow-up care, he says he is living in extremely precarious financial circumstances, stating that he has no means to pay for lodging or food, and must maintain a liquid diet while awaiting the continuation of his treatment.

The journalist made an urgent appeal to the Minister of Public Health, Dr. Sinal Bertrand, as well as to Haitian state authorities, for support with housing, food, and medical expenses. Saying he felt abandoned and without support, he asked the authorities to act quickly so he could continue his treatment and gradually return to a normal life."
