Headlines that kill: How not to revictimize trans people

“There are headlines that kill twice. Juliana Giraldo, a trans woman, was murdered in cold blood by a military officer on a Colombian highway on Sept. 24. The cries of pain from her husband explaining that 'we do not carry weapons, we do not carry anything, I did not do anything' swept the country in minutes.

Shortly after, journalism killed her again: 'A man died after being shot at a military checkpoint in Miranda, Cauca,' read the headline of a station; 'She called herself Juliana,' the story said. Of course she was not a man, nor did she call herself something, nor did she have an ‘alias’ as another media outlet said, and apparently there was not a checkpoint either (but that's another story)."
