High court rejects lawsuit against Colombian president for calling journalists ‘mafia dolls’

"Colombia’s Council of State—the highest court handling cases involving the government—has rejected a lawsuit filed by 16 prominent journalists and two foundations against President Gustavo Petro for his use of the term “muñecas de la mafia” (“mafia dolls” in English). The presidency had requested the court dismiss the case.

The ruling has drawn attention because while it acknowledged the president was referring to female journalists, it concluded that his words could not be interpreted as an attack on the fundamental rights of all women, as he did not direct the comment at a specific individual.

The court found no dispute over the expression used by the president against a group of unidentified journalists. However, it also determined there was no evidence in the suit proving the plaintiffs had officially requested the president to clarify to whom he was referring."
