How online outlets and social media fuel far-right mobilization from Brazil to Mexico

"Brazil first became the testing ground for the Latin American far right’s new digital machinery, a strategy powerful enough to help elevate Jair Bolsonaro to the presidency in 2019. It later boosted figures like Argentina’s Javier Milei and Chile’s Johannes Kaiser, and is now seeking a foothold in Mexico, still without a clear leader.

The method is consistent: coordinated networks spread radical messages outside traditional media, using X, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, livestreams and online outlets to call for civil disobedience and organize protests presented as spontaneous. One such march took place on Nov. 15 in Mexico City against President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Lacking political representation, Mexico’s far-right activity is concentrated online. A recent 'Gen Z' call for protests, marketed as a grassroots initiative, was actually a 'coordinated digital strategy,' according to an investigation by Infodemia, –a Mexican government unit dedicated to analyzing disinformation. The investigation links influencers, opposition figures and accounts tied to the global ultranationalist organization Atlas Network."
