"The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and its Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression called on the Mexican State to redouble its efforts in the investigations of journalists and human rights defenders [targeted with] the illegitimate use of Pegasus surveillance software.
"The State must consider the work of these people in their lines of investigation and the impact this type of action has on a democracy," the commission said in a press release.
According to records, the list of people affected by Pegasus in recent years includes, among others, journalists, human rights defenders, a judge of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, and a member of the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts on the Ayotzinapa case."
