IACHR grants precautionary measures in favor of 34 identified members of Salvadoran digital newspaper El Faro

“The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) adopted Resolution 12/2021 on Jan. 4, 2021, by which it granted precautionary measures in favor of 34 identified members of the El Faro digital newspaper in El Salvador, after considering that they are in a situation of gravity and urgency of risk of irreparable damage to their rights.

When making its decision, the Commission valued that, according to the request, the beneficiaries allegedly work for El Faro digital newspaper, an independent media outlet, and would allegedly be subjected to harassment, threats, intimidation and stigmatization - mainly through social networks - because of their journalistic activities. Likewise, the Commission considered that the information received about the risk situation of the beneficiaries, assessed in the contextual framework in El Salvador, suggests that the alleged acts of harassment, threats, and intimidation towards the beneficiaries would have the purpose not only to intimidate them but also also hinder those activities derived from their journalistic work.
