"The murder of Colombian journalist and humorist Jaime Garzón, perpetrated on Aug. 13, 1999, will reach the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), which will study the violation of the fundamental rights to life, personal integrity and freedom of thought and expression involved in his homicide.
In this regard, the IACHR admitted the petition that the Colombian Commission of Jurists (CCJ) and the José Alvear Restrepo Lawyers' Collective (Cajar, by its Spanish acronym) made in 2011 for the murder of Garzón, and dismissed the petition for inadmissibility of the case raised by the Colombian State, the two organizations reported on Mon. Sept 26.
The IACHR noted that while there have been criminal investigations and contentious-administrative decisions, 23 years have passed since the time of the crime without all those responsible for his murder having been identified, investigated and tried, 'much less inquired about all possible masterminds within the military and civilian chain of command.'"
