"The Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) condemned the intensification of 'repression' by the Daniel Ortega regime against the media in Nicaragua on Thursday [May 11]. The regime's actions have resulted in the detention of three journalists since last April in the Central American country. In a statement, the organization, based in Miami, urged the international community to denounce the regime's persecution of freedom of expression and the press.
According to the IAPA, Hazel Zamora, news director and correspondent for Channel 10 in Bluefields, located in the country's Caribbean zone, was arrested on May 5 while traveling on a bus with her underage children. The police also conducted a raid on the journalist's house, based on an arrest warrant issued on May 3 - World Press Freedom Day. She was charged with alleged conspiracy against the state and society, as well as spreading fake news, crimes considered 'treason against the homeland.'
The statement further details that Zamora has been released on probation, but is required to appear daily and sign before a court."
