Incoming Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum promises to strengthen journalists protection mechanism

"Claudia Sheinbaum, virtual president-elect [of Mexico], said that in her government there will be guarantees to exercise freedom of expression. In her press conference this Wednesday [July 10], Sheinbaum opened the possibility that there will be a reinforcement of the Journalist Protection Mechanism.

'Rosa Icela (Rodríguez), who is going to be in the Ministry of the Interior, would have to work on it, but we are going to do whatever is necessary to protect journalists. They have to be certain of their safety to be able to exercise freedom of expression and freedom of the press, of criticism, of course,' she said.

The next president rejected the results of the Article 19 study that documented 3,408 attacks against journalists in the current six-year term, from Dec. 1, 2018 to March 31, 2024.

For the organization, the increase of 62% compared to the same period in the administration of Enrique Peña Nieto is due to the constant attacks against the press in the morning press conferences of the President of the Republic and judicial harassment."
