International concerns over threats against judge handling case of José Rubén Zamora in Guatemala

"The United Nations (UN) special rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, Margaret Satterthwaite, as well as 19 international organizations, expressed their concern about reports of threats and intimidation against the judge handling the case against the founder of elPeriódico, José Rubén Zamora.

On her X account, the United Nations rapporteur wrote that she learned of worrying news from Guatemala about allegations of intimidation and threats against the judge.

As she explained, the threats against Judge Rodolfo Yraheta Córdova, of the Second Criminal Court, occurred prior to the hearing in the case against journalist José Rubén Zamora scheduled for this Friday, Oct. 18. Likewise, Amnesty International, along with 18 other international organizations, demanded that the guarantees of due process be respected during the hearing."
