Intimidation of journalist exposes powerful advisor to Argentine President Javier Milei

“In Buenos Aires, on Tuesday [April 29] night, a televised debate was held between the candidates who will compete in the upcoming legislative elections in the Argentine capital, on Sunday the 18th. This is a key election for [Javier] Milei, the first major electoral dispute he will face since becoming president. As part of his fight with former president Mauricio Macri, whom he intends to defeat in his stronghold, Milei is nominating his spokesperson, Manuel Adorni. To support the candidate from La Libertad Avanza, [presidential advisor Santiago] Caputo appeared at the TV studio where the debate was being prepared.

While waiting to enter, the advisor, who is part of what Milei calls the government's 'iron triangle,' was surrounded by journalists. Photographer Antonio Becerra, from newspaper Tiempo Argentino, focused from a short distance, while others took pictures from a greater distance. Caputo became angry. First, he covered the camera with his hand. 'Don't take pictures of me (...) You're crazy,' he told him, according to testimony from those present. Then he grabbed the press credential Becerra was wearing around his neck, read it, and finally took a picture with his phone."
