Journalism defense organizations form coalition in Brazil

"Ten press freedom organizations launched this Monday [May 6] the Coalition in Defense of Journalism during a session of the Senate Social Communication Council (CCS), in Brasília. The entities, including Abraji, have already been acting together to focus on journalists' defense issues in the last two years, when press freedom was under severe attack in the heat of the presidential elections.

The launch of the Coalition was announced by Bia Barbosa, from RSF (Reporters Without Borders, for its acronym in French). She explained that the initiative was born from the joint work of these 10 organizations, which became more systematic from 2022 onwards, understanding that electoral periods 'are moments in which violence against journalists and communicators increases and there was a very big understanding that was confirmed by our measurements,' the journalist said, highlighting the escalation of violence."
