"The Journalism Support Fund (FAJ, for its initials in Portuguese), an independent initiative aimed at strengthening local journalism in Brazil, was launched this Thursday [March 27]. The notice is now available and the fund will select up to 15 regional organizations, with priority given to outlets that operate in municipalities without active journalistic coverage, the so-called 'news deserts.'

Each project will receive between R$75,000 and R$150,000 per year for three consecutive years. The funds will be used for operational expenses, training, technology and actions that help the media outlets stabilize and expand their reach. In addition to financial support, the selected organizations will have access to mentoring and technical support.

The JSF is initially funded by five international institutions — the Ford Foundation, IFPIM, Luminate, Oak Foundation and Open Society Foundations — and will be managed by an advisory board and executive team. It is the first fund of its kind in the Global South, inspired by international models of support for independent media."
