"Journalist Eric Hurtado was physically assaulted while covering a news story in the province of Chincha, [Peru], in a new incident that once again raises concerns about the safety of the press in public spaces. The attack occurred on Monday, Jan. 5, 2026, on San Carlos Street, behind the Santa Ana school.
According to the information gathered, the journalist was reporting on the death of a citizen, an event that had caused a stir among residents of the area. Witnesses said that Hurtado was carrying out his work respectfully, objectively and at a distance from the scene of the incident, when he was violently attacked by an individual.
The assailant, allegedly a relative of the deceased person, had previously threatened another journalist and then attacked Eric Hurtado, grabbing him by the neck in the middle of the street."
