"A São Paulo court ordered journalist Luan Araújo to pay one minimum wage (R$ 1,621, or about US $300) for the crime of defamation against former congresswoman Carla Zambelli, currently imprisoned in Italy.
Luan Araújo is the man who, in 2022—on the eve of the second round of the presidential elections—was chased by Zambelli in the Jardins district of São Paulo following an altercation.
Accompanied by bodyguards, the then-congresswoman was brandishing a weapon. The incident occurred at the corner of Joaquim Eugênio de Lima Street and Lorena Avenue and was filmed. She said she had been pushed.
Zambelli was convicted in the case last August by the STF (Supreme Federal Court) for the crimes of illegal possession of a firearm and unlawful coercion. The sentence was five years and three months in prison under a semi-open regime, in addition to the payment of a fine equivalent to 400 minimum wages in effect at the time of the events."
