Journalist in Bolivia threatened with death as tensions rise over Morales candidacy

“A protester marching alongside supporters of former President Evo Morales in the city of Cochabamba threatened to set fire to news outlets that do not cover their demand for President Luis Arce’s resignation. Meanwhile, in Yapacaní (Santa Cruz), a journalist received a death threat.

As roadblocks on major highways and marches by Morales supporters continued into a second week, press freedom advocates warned of increasing verbal attacks targeting journalists and news organizations. The demonstrations are part of a broader campaign to pressure authorities to allow Morales to run in Bolivia’s general election this August, according to the National Press Association (ANP for its initials in Spanish), which represents the country’s leading newspapers.

Soledad Mabel Prado Nogales, a journalist and correspondent for El Deber in Yapacaní, received a death threat after reporting on a June 8 demonstration in which Morales supporters paraded on motorcycles.”
