Journalist killings in 2025 in Latin America already surpass last year's total

"Between January and July 2025, at least 13 journalists were killed simply for doing their job: reporting information of public interest to their fellow citizens. During this period, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) recorded eight murders in Mexico, two in Peru, one in Colombia, one in Guatemala and one in Ecuador. In all of these cases, the motive for the murder was likely linked to the journalists’ work.

Most of the victims worked for local or community media and reported on high-risk subjects such as corruption, organised crime and the environment. Several of these professionals had already received threats or been the target of smear campaigns."
