Journalist threatened after exposing irregularities in Ecuador sanitation project

“The president of Ecuador’s Communication Council, César Martín, formally filed a complaint with prosecutors in the city of Chone on behalf of local reporter Luis Arteaga Carrasco, who has been the target of threats and a failed assassination attempt.

According to Martín, Arteaga participated as a citizen observer in the bidding process for Chone’s Master Sanitation and Stormwater Plan, an activity promoted by the Citizen Participation and Social Control Council. As a result of that oversight, the Office of the Comptroller General conducted a special audit that uncovered civil liabilities and indications of possible criminal misconduct.

Following his participation, Arteaga received several threats, including written messages and intimidating phone calls, prompting him to leave the city for six months.

The situation worsened earlier this year. In April, a man on a motorcycle attempted to shoot the Arteaga with a firearm that filed to discharge. Arteaga has continued to receive threats since.”
