"The Journalists Association of El Salvador (APES, by its Spanish acronym) expressed its solidarity this Saturday, April 9, with the local news outlet El Faro and denounced an 'apparent process of criminalization for their journalistic work' against two of its members.

'In the last few hours, it became known a possible filing of a notice with the Attorney General of the Republic against journalists from El Faro. APES stands in solidarity with the affected journalists and extends its support," the organization said in a statement.

APES showed 'enormous concern' and condemned 'any use of gag reforms against journalists exercising press freedom.' This refers to the reforms to the Law for the Prohibition of Gangs and the Penal Code approved last April 5 and that came into force that same day. It punishes with up to 15 years in prison the publication of 'any written statement' that alludes to the 'territorial control' of gangs.

On Saturday, a Twitter user who identifies himself as a 'member' of the ruling party Nuevas Ideas posted that he would file a notice with the Prosecutor's Office against the two journalists."
