Journalists blocked and injured during repression at protest in Coahuila, Mexico

“On Saturday, Sept. 18, Gloria Ruíz, reporter and director of the digital media outlet CuatroP Noticias, was the victim of news blocking. Likewise, freelance journalist Ángel Maldonado was the victim of injuries and damage to work equipment by elements of the Coahuila Public Security Secretariat, called the Coahuila Civil Police (PCC), in Ciudad Acuña.

The journalists covered a social protest outside the Coahuila State Attorney General's Office, derived from the detention of citizen Pablo Ortega Alvarado. It is important to note that both Ruíz and Maldonado have protection measures under the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists. In the case of Ángel Maldonado, he pressed the assistance button to request help, however, they never returned his call. On the other hand, in the case of Gloria Ruíz, her bodyguards managed to defuse the situation and prevent the attacks against her from escalating."
