The National Association of Journalists (ANP, by its Spanish acronym) of Peru published a communiqué on the occasion of Journalists' Day, commemorated on Oct. 1, in which it pointed out that the date comes "under challenging circumstances for journalistic activity."
According to the ANP, "the permanent siege to those who inform shows that, today as in the past, those who seek to diminish democratic arenas first seek to neutralize the right to say and to know."
"In recent months, the ANP has registered 207 attacks on journalists in the context of social protest, a failed attempt to establish an 'express' protocol for coverage that ran out of defenders, a doomed 'gag law' bill, and an attenuated attempt to criminalize expression, disguised in a request for legislative powers. Journalists become targets over and over again. Those who concentrate political power want to limit their ability to inform as much as possible."
