Journalists documenting illegal animal sales attacked in Mexico City

Three journalists from the digital news outlet SinEmbargo were attacked and threatened while attempting to document the illegal sale of animals at the Mixhuca Market in Mexico City, human rights organization Article 19 reported. A vendor harassed the reporters inside the market, demanding they delete their recorded footage. The team left the market after noticing they were being followed.

Outside the market, two people on a motorcycle attacked the journalists and damaged their vehicle, Article 19 reported. The aggressors demanded that they delete their footage and threatened to shoot them, it added. After the attack, the journalists filed a complaint with the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office, which classified the incident as an “administrative offense.”

Article 19 called for a thorough investigation that, from the outset, considers the journalists’ work as a possible motive. The organization also urged authorities to implement immediate protection measures for the journalists.
