Journalists in Colombia face increasing threats, burnout and self-censorship

"2024 will go down in history as the deadliest year worldwide for journalists: 128 reporters were killed in retaliation for their work.

In Colombia, the past year was the deadliest and most violent of the past decade. In the first months of this year, that trend continues: from Jan. 1 to May 2, there have been 57 documented threats and the murder of one journalist, Óscar Gómez Agudelo. There is also a clear increase in threats, judicial harassment, smear campaigns by public officials, and a worsening economic outlook for news outlets.

We present the report ‘How journalism is lived and survived in Colombia,’ an analysis that shows journalism in the country is not only precarious—it is emotionally exhausted. Working conditions, business models, institutional pressures, and various forms of violence are eroding a profession essential to democracy. Without concrete, structural, and targeted action, there is a risk that worker burnout will become a silent form of censorship."
