The National Association of Bolivian Journalists (ANPB, for its initials in Spanish) and the Association of International Press Correspondents (ACPI) expressed their 'deep concern' over statements made by Ruth Nina, leader of the now-defunct Bolivian National Action Party (PAN-BOL), whom they accused of endangering democratic institutions and press freedom with her remarks and attempts to blame the media.
In a joint statement, both organizations condemned statements from Nina, who said that 'on Aug. 17, instead of counting votes, they will count the dead,' and who subsequently accused journalists and media outlets of 'distorting' her words and exercising 'media violence.'
'We categorically reject such accusations, because journalists and media outlets have simply reproduced her statements verbatim and contextualized them within the public debate,' the ANPB and the ACPI said."
