"Judge José Morales of the Second Criminal Court ordered the release of journalist José Rubén Zamora, who had spent more than 1,295 days in pretrial detention in connection with two criminal cases brought by the Special Prosecutor's Office Against Impunity (FECI, for its Spanish acronym). With this decision, Zamora will face both cases under house arrest.
In his ruling, the judge determined that the time the journalist has spent in custody exceeds even the potential sentence he could receive for the alleged crimes—obstruction of justice and falsification of documents—should he be convicted. The judge emphasized that, to date, there is no final judgment against him."
