Latin America faces challenges and advances in internet freedom, Freedom House report reveals

The 2024 Freedom on the Net report, published by the organization Freedom House, analyzed global trends in online censorship and repression, including in Latin America, which according to the study faces challenges and some advances. The document, which assesses conditions of internet freedom in 72 countries, included Chile for the first time. There were solid guarantees for human rights online in the country, which obtained the fourth best position among all the countries studied.

In contrast, countries like Brazil and Mexico have continued to fight misinformation and digital manipulation, especially during elections. Nicaragua, Venezuela and Cuba are the countries with the lowest level of internet freedom in the region.

The report highlights that to reverse the global trend of declining internet freedom, it is essential to strengthen fundamental rights online and ensure that policy interventions are aligned with democratic principles.
