Latin American collaborative projects win at 2024 Online Journalism Awards

Two collaborative journalistic projects from Latin America were recognized at the 2024 Online Journalism Awards, standing out for their transnational approach to investigating complex topics.

The project "Tráileres, trampa para migrantes" (Cargo trucks: a trap for migrants) won the Excellence in Collaboration and Partnerships category. Led by Noticias Telemundo and the Latin American Center for Investigative Journalism (CLIP, for its acronym in Spanish), the investigation revealed the dangerous human trafficking scheme from Mexico to the USA. The report lasted seven months and included the participation of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), Bellingcat and local outlets such as Pie de Página, Chiapas Paralelo and En un 2×3 Tamaulipas (Mexico), Plaza Pública (Guatemala) and Contracorriente (Honduras).

The "Amazon Underworld" project won the Al Neuharth Innovation in Investigative Journalism Award, Small Newsroom category. Conducted by InfoAmazonia (Brazil), La Liga Contra el Silencio (Colombia) and Armando.Info (Venezuela), the investigation mapped the presence of armed groups and illicit economies in the border regions of six Amazonian countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. The project, which lasted one year and four months, created the first interactive map on the topic, based on primary sources and official documents.
