Nearly 20 independent Latin American media outlets signed an editorial stating that journalists in the region must strengthen their collaborative networks, work to counter information noise and misinformation, and continue to rigorously monitor abuses of power, given what they called the chaos and confusion generated by U.S. President Donald Trump's return to the White House and the impact this has had on issues such as the environment, migration, trade and international relations.
This was expressed by media outlets such as Periodistas por el Planeta (Argentina), InfoAmazonia (Brazil), La Liga Contra el Silencio (Colombia), Lado B (Mexico) and Ojo Público (Peru) in the editorial “Blooming in the Mud: The Journalism Latin America Needs in the Face of Trump,” published on March 17.
“The journalists of this network of independent media sources in Latin America are compelled to try to explain how the decisions of one man, or two —for we cannot ignore Elon Musk— from the Oval Office can have a transversal effect not only on regional politics, but also on the continent's most vulnerable communities,” the editorial says.
“We have set out to encourage journalism that avoids reactivity and catastrophizing, that does not allow itself to be overwhelmed by the flood of information noise and lies on social media, but that anchors itself with a genuine commitment to reality, which will always be more complex and nuanced,” it continues.
