Legislative Assembly of El Salvador, with an official majority, approves sentences of up to 15 years in prison for reporting on gangs

“The Legislative Assembly approved this Tuesday, March 5, a reform to the Penal Code to sanction with ten to fifteen years in prison those who through the media ‘reproduce or transmit messages or communications’ from gangs. This prohibition covers the dissemination of 'texts, paintings, designs, drawings and graffiti' of gangs, according to the reform approved during the same plenary session to the Law for the Prohibition of Gangs. The Association of Journalists of El Salvador (APES) published a statement in which it warned that the purpose of what they classified as 'gag reforms' is to 'criminalize journalistic work'."
