Lethal violence against journalists grows with impunity in the region

"The Voces del Sur Network is concerned about the increase of murders of journalists in 2022. The precariousness of journalistic work, based on the lack of security and guarantees for professional practice, has become a constant in Latin America. Violence against journalists, it seems, no longer knows borders or democratic situation.

Comparative annual figures:

Our monitoring system recorded between January and May 2022, 18 murders against journalists in Latin America, a figure that at this point is heading for a historical record that already exceeds all of 2020 and 2021. The journalists murdered so far this year have been: 11 from Mexico, 3 from Haiti, 1 from Honduras, 1 from Venezuela, 1 from Brazil, and 1 from Chile.

(...)

These figures reveal a harsh reality: murders against journalists in this 2022 have surpassed the records of past years and predict an end of the year with dire figures for freedom of expression."
