"Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FGR) announced on Tuesday [July 8] that it has opened an investigation into former President Enrique Peña Nieto (2012–2018) following a report linking him to alleged bribes totaling $25 million to allow the use of the controversial Israeli spyware Pegasus.
The head of the FGR noted that during the previous administration, several complaints were filed regarding the Pegasus software, which was allegedly used as a surveillance tool, but at the time they could not be substantiated with sufficient evidence.
An international media investigation revealed in 2021 that governments around the world had used Pegasus to monitor some 50,000 phone numbers. Of those, 15,000 were in Mexico during Peña Nieto’s presidency — the highest number in any country. The investigation showed that communications belonging to journalists and activists had been intercepted."
