Mexican journalist announces indefinite retirement following harassment and threats

Mexican journalist Humberto Padgett was the victim of an armed robbery on Friday, Sept. 13 in the municipality of Cuitzeo, in the state of Michoacán, Mexico. Four unknown individuals pointed long guns at the journalist and took his vehicle, IDs and work equipment, the freedom of expression organization Artículo 19 reported in a thread on X.

The organization said that the journalist was assisted by local police. However, it made an urgent call to the Mexican Interior Ministry's Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists to provide coordinated support to the journalist.

Two days after the incident, Padgett announced on X his indefinite retirement from journalism, which he attributed to “the harassment and threats” he and his family face. Just last June, the journalist was arrested after going to the Mexico City Prosecutor's Office to ask for explanations about the sudden closure of the judicial case in which he accused the Prosecutor's Office of leaking his personal data to drug dealers.
