“Journalist Martín Melvin García Carvajal, 57, was found dead around 3 p.m. on Monday, July 7, in a rented room on the island of Cozumel in the state of Quintana Roo.
Local police and state prosecutors responded to the scene and recovered the body, which showed advanced signs of decomposition. Authorities cordoned off the area to carry out forensic work. The Quintana Roo state prosecutor’s office said the investigation remains open and all possibilities are being considered, including foul play.
García Carvajal worked for years as a reporter in Cozumel and Mérida, Yucatán, focusing primarily on sports coverage. He was also the author of the 2015 book Mayra, su vida terminó, su historia comenzó ("Mayra, Her Life Ended, Her Story Began"), in which he linked former Quintana Roo Gov. Félix González Canto, a member of the PRI party, to a crime that occurred on the island of Cozumel.”
