Mexican judicial candidate linked by independent group to journalist’s disappearance

"Among the more than 3,400 candidates vying for votes in Mexico’s first judicial elections, nominations come in all forms. But one in the northern region of the country stands out as a glaring red flag: a candidate running for magistrate while being linked to the disappearance of a young journalist.

The candidate is attorney Andrés Montoya García, a lawyer from the University of Sonora. He presents himself as a specialist in public security, justice, and human rights with more than 30 years of experience.

His résumé omits the reason the independent group Defensorxs has labeled his candidacy as “high risk”: Montoya García is accused of masterminding the abduction and possible murder of journalist Alfredo Jiménez Mota, 25, who went missing on April 2, 2005, in Hermosillo, capital of the state of Sonora."
