NGOs denounce removal of 11 news outlets' Facebook pages in San Luis Potosi, Mexico

"The organizations ARTICLE 19 Office for Mexico and Central America, Communication and Information for Women (CIMAC), and SocialTIC have documented that between July and October of this year, unknown individuals have removed or affected at least 11 Facebook pages of news outlets and journalists from the state of San Luis Potosí [Mexico].

Although the masterminds and material perpetrators behind these deletions have not yet been identified, it is of utmost concern to the undersigned organizations that in only four months there has been such a critical increase of cases of removal or deletion of information on Facebook in a single state. In contrast, during 2022, ARTICLE 19 documented 12 acts of removal of content and four interventions of accounts throughout the country.

[...] All of the [removed] news outlets mainly cover political news. In at least four of these cases a similar pattern was identified: unknown individuals managed to hack the pages on the social media platform Facebook, becoming their administrators, changed the page names, and then deleted them."
