Mexico: Journalist sued by Quintana Roo state governor's husband amidst investigation on alleged corruption

"ARTICLE 19 condemns the judicial harassment against journalist Jonathann Estrada, director of [the digital media outlet] Cancún Channel/Contrapunto, on the part of Omar Terrazas, husband of the current governor of [the Mexican state of] Quintana Roo. On Jan. 22, the journalist [...] received a lawsuit in which he is summoned for the alleged crime of moral and economic damage. The lawsuit points out [alleged] damages from the journalist's publications on an alleged network of corruption, with the possible involvement of governor [Mara Lezama's] husband.

[…]

As a provisional measure, the journalist is required not to publish any information about Mara Lezama, a public official who is subject, in accordance with international standards framed by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, to public scrutiny. ARTICLE 19 therefore urges the government of Quintana Roo to refrain from using the legal system as a means to restrict freedoms of expression and of the press."
