Mexican crime reporter released from house arrest, still faces obstruction charge

"Journalist Rafael León Segovia, a police beat reporter in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, regained his freedom on Thursday [Jan. 22] after being under house arrest due to his indictment for the crimes of obstruction of justice and crimes against public security institutions.

In an interview with local media, León Segovia said that he had obtained a federal amparo [protection order] that overturned the precautionary measure of house arrest that had been imposed on him for a year, allowing him to regain his freedom of movement and resume his activities as a journalist, even though the legal proceedings against him remain open.

The reporter said he will return to his professional duties, but acknowledged that he still fears being the victim of retaliation for his journalistic work. In this regard, he indicated that he will modify his reporting style and will no longer prioritize arriving immediately at the scene of events, in order to avoid conflicts with the authorities."
