"Alejandro Gertz Manero, head of Mexico's Attorney General's Office, confirmed on Dec. 17, 2024, that he will request the extradition to Mexico of Dámaso López Serrano, also known as 'Mini Lic', from the U.S. government, for being suspected to be the mastermind behind the murder of journalist Javier Valdez Cárdenas.

Valdez was co-founder of the weekly Ríodoce and correspondent of the newspaper La Jornada and was murdered on May 15, 2017, in Culiacán, Sinaloa.

During the presidential morning press conference, Gertz Manero said Mexico had insisted to the U.S. government, 'on countless occasions', the handover of López Serrano, but due to his status as a protected witness, they had been denied. 'He is the intellectual author of that murder. As you well know, the rest of the perpetrators have already been prosecuted and are in jail, this one was missing', Gertz Manero said."
