"The three people who participated in the murder of Mexican journalist Lourdes Maldonado, who lived in Tijuana - a city bordering the United States - were sentenced to prison, after an shortened legal process carried out on Oct. 26.
The Attorney General of Baja California, Iván Carpio Sánchez, informed that Guillermo Julián Castro, who pleaded guilty as actual perpetrator of the murder, was sentenced to 24 years in prison, while Erick Eduardo Contreras and Kevin Alberto Fernández, were sentenced to 20 years, for being co-perpetrators of the crime.
Lourdes Maldonado was shot in the face on Jan. 23rd of this year, while she was in her car outside her home.
Lourdes Maldonado's murder is one of the emblematic cases of violence against the press in Mexico in 2022, where 18 journalists have been murdered according to the Inter American Press Association (IAPA)."
