"The undersigned organizations address Brazilian society to express their indignation and revolt over a new attack against Vera Magalhães, host of the program Roda Viva, of TV Cultura, and columnist for the newspaper O Globo and CBN radio. Magalhães was harassed and verbally assaulted on Tues. night on Sept. 13, by Sao Paulo state deputy Douglas Garcia.
At the end of the debate promoted by UOL, TV Cultura and Folha de Sao Paulo with the candidates for the Sao Paulo government, Garcia approached the journalist to attack her. The deputy said that Vera Magalhaes 'is a disgrace to journalism,' copying the words of President Jair Bolsonaro in the debate among presidential candidates on Aug. 28.
[...]
The hostility of these attacks cannot be normalized. In the past four years, journalists, especially women, have been targeted by the president and his allies. Misogynist and sexist attacks, repeated on a large scale, and disinformation campaigns orchestrated by public officials have undermined public debate."
