"Four out of every 10 attacks against journalists or media workers have a possible relation to public officials, the Comprehensive Human Rights Group (GIDH, for its Spanish acronym) warned this Sunday [March 10].
'This worrying figure highlights the urgent need to reform and strengthen the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists in the country,' emphasized Jesús Rey Fierro, president of the GIDH, in a statement.
Fierro, recognized with the 2017 National Human Rights Award, explained that official figures from the Protection Mechanism indicate that 834 attacks against defenders and journalists in the country were recorded between October 2012 and November 2023. He detailed that from this total, 356 (43%) are probably attributed to public officials."
