“The Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is pleased to announce the launch of the Americas Dialogue about Freedom of Expression Online. This initiative, which is open and multisectoral in nature, arises in order to address the challenges currently presented by digital technologies for the exercise of human rights in the region.
On Feb. 5, 2021, the IACHR and its Rapporteur noted that freedom of expression on the Internet is at a turning point in the hemisphere, characterized, among other aspects, by the deterioration of public debate; the dilemmas about content moderation and its compatibility with democratic and human rights standards; and the lack of efforts to advance with respect to digital literacy oriented towards the development of civic skills.”
