Organizations condemn million-dollar lawsuit against Mexican journalist Claudia Amelia Solera

“The organizations Artículo 19 Mexico and Central America, the collective Toma tu Remo, and Perteneces A.C. expressed their concern for the use of judicial mechanisms with the intention of inhibiting and intimidating the exercise of journalism and freedom of expression [...] against Mexican journalist Claudia Amelia Solera, from Enfoque Noticias radio station, of the NRM Comunicaciones network.

According to Artículo 19, on May 6, Solera, the former collaborator of Grupo Imagen network and Excélsior newspaper, was visited at her home by two women who informed her that she had been sued for moral damages by Mario Alberto Quiroz, who claims to be a lawyer in Mexico City. The legal proceedings against Solera were allegedly initiated as a result of a report published more than 13 years ago, on Dec. 19, 2010, in Excélsior under the headline ‘Alert raised for law firm that preys on retirees.’

[…]

The lawsuit requests the journalist to pay 300 million pesos [U.S. $18 million] for the moral damage allegedly caused to the aforementioned lawyer.”
