“The Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji, by its Portuguese acronym) and the Association of Educational Journalists (Jeduca) condemn the invasion of the buildings of the National Congress, the Planalto and the Supreme Federal Court (STF) in Brasilia by criminals this Sun. Jan. 8, 2023. They also condemn the attacks on journalists who were simply carrying out their job of following and reporting on these events that threaten Brazilian democracy.
At least five journalists were assaulted or had their equipment broken and even stolen, according to information provided by the Union of Journalists of the Federal District of Brazil.
[...]
Abraji, as well as Jeduca and other press freedom organizations, had been reporting and denouncing the escalation of violence within these extremist groups, without adequate action being taken by public authorities and security forces. From Oct. 30, 2022 to Jan. 6, 2023, Abraji -together with the National Federation of Journalists (Fenaj)- registered 77 attacks of political violence against the press."
