“The Journalists' Union of Paraguay (SPP for its initials in Spanish) has raised concerns over the ‘deterioration of purchasing power that affects workers in general, and our sector in particular.’
According to the union, food prices have increased by more than 40% over the past four years, while wages have not kept pace. The SPP also criticized employers for failing to comply with wage adjustments decreed by the Ministry of Labor, Employment, and Social Security (MTESS), saying some companies are not paying the minimum annual base wages set for the sector.
In companies with collective bargaining agreements, the union said wage adjustments are typically tied to the general Consumer Price Index (CPI), which does not reflect the actual economic strain faced by workers.
The SPP urged both the government and employers to open a dialogue and work toward a wage policy that supports workers and their families, while also boosting the national economy. The union backed broader labor federation demands for an extraordinary wage adjustment in response to what it called an extraordinary loss in purchasing power.”
