Journalist Ana Lilia Mata assaulted by police in Morelos, Mexico

"On June 30, reporter Ana Lilia Mata went to cover a conference given by Santiago Nieto Castillo, former head of the Financial Intelligence Unit of the Mexican Federal Government. After the event ended, Mata tried to interview public officials, at which point a member of the Criminal Investigation Police (PIC, for its acronym in Spanish) approached her and put his forearm around her so that she could not move and then constantly pulled her backpack to prevent her from passing, thus blocking her journalistic work and making it impossible to provide information of public interest.

In an interview with ARTICLE 19, the journalist commented that she felt that: she was treated like a criminal, as they made her work impossible in an arbitrary manner, and that she was only released by the officer until he realized that she was being recorded by other fellow reporters who were also covering the event. It is worth noting that when the journalist shared publications on social networks where media and journalists supported her denouncing the aggressions she had suffered, several users posted negative comments about Ana Lilia to discredit and intimidate her, messages such as that's why they kill them."
