"Peru, once again, is in the spotlight. The country has been included along with Venezuela, Paraguay, El Salvador and Guatemala in a new list of nations that are actively restricting civic space through laws and regulations that affect the operation of social organizations, independent media and human rights defenders. So warns the report "Curtailing Civic Space: Tightening Restrictions on Civil Society in the Americas," published by the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA), a renowned Washington D.C.-based think tank.
'The government of Peru [has] enacted laws designed to make it difficult, if not impossible, for human rights organizations and other civil society organizations to operate,' said the report's authors, Maureen Meyer and Corie Welch."
