Peru’s Congress restricts reporter access following corruption coverage, press group says

"On July 16, 2025, Peru’s Congress issued a directive that bans journalists from seeking statements from congressional employees and prohibits them from approaching offices inside the legislative building. The move comes after several media outlets published reports detailing employee complaints, including allegations that lawmakers were taking a portion of their salaries.

The directive also imposes rules on journalists’ attire, entry hours and includes sanctions for violations, such as the loss of accreditation and the elimination of that outlet’s press credential without replacement.

The Institute for Press and Society (IPYS) warned that the directive limits press freedom and transparency in public institutions."
