"The Peruvian justice system sentenced on Monday [Sept. 30] former military chief Alberto Rivero Valdeavellano to 18 years in prison for the forced disappearance of journalist Jaime Ayala in 1984, as well as for the premeditated murder and the disappearance of almost 70 other people in the Andean region of Ayacucho.
Judge Miluska Cano read the sentence against Rivero, who served as chief of the Political Military Command of Huanta and La Mar, in Ayacucho, at the time of the internal armed conflict, and ordered that it be served from the day he was apprehended and brought to justice."
